Susie Sellars Carson (left), Chris Fonvielle (middle), Tabitha McEachern (right). Susie Sellars Carson (1920-2008) was a lifelong resident of Southport, NC. She was a well-respected historian of the area, having taught local history at Brunswick Community College. She was a member of the Brunswick County Historical Society and a founding member of the Southport Historical Society. She wrote "Joshua's Dream: A Town with Two Names" a history of Southport. She wrote a weekly column on local history for the Wilmington Star-News, and won the Clarendon Cup from the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society for excellence in historical research and writing. She was considered the "Official Historian of Southport." She is buried in the Northwood Cemetery in Southport.
Dr. Chris Eugene Fonvielle, Jr. (1953 -) is a local professor, lecturer, historian, and Cape Fear author. A native of Wilmington, he was the last curator of the Old Blockade Runner Museum in 1979. He is considered to be the undisputed leading scholar on the Wilmington campaign and the battle of Fort Fisher, with many books on this subject to his credit. He is a professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where he teaches courses on the Civil War, Wilmington, and the Lower Cape Fear.
Tabitha McEachern (1910 - 2003) was a local philanthropist who contributed heavily to community and local history causes. She was active on many local boards, and subsidized programs and scholarships at the arboretum, the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the Cape Fear Museum, and Cape Fear Community College.
