Robert Feaster Coleman Jr. was born in 1918 in Wilmington. He attended New Hanover High School and graduated from North Carolina State College, earning Bachelor's degrees in Civil Engineering and Sanitary Engineering as well as a Master of Science in Civil Engineering. Coleman went on to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning a Certificate in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. In 1946, Coleman began work for the City of Wilmington, where he served as City Engineer, Director of Public Works and special assistant to the City Manager for capital projects. He retired in 1988, after 42 years of service. Coleman was also a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II and the Korean war. He died in 2009 and is buried in Oakdale cemetery.
