John W. Harper was born on Masonboro Sound in New Hanover County, NC in 1856, and died in 1917. He was a steamboat captain and owner of the Wilmington & Southport Steamboat Company. His most popular steamers were the "Wilmington," the "Sylvan Grove," and the "Passport," which made daily runs to Southport from Wilmington. He was also an officer of the New Hanover Transit Company, which was instrumental in the development of Carolina Beach, NC. His house is at 311 South Front Street. Captain Harper is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
