Pearl Winner Russell (1902-1984) was the granddaughter of Joseph L. Winner, one of the first residents of Carolina Beach, NC. He arrived in 1880, and laid out one of the first streets, St. Joseph's Street. She played piano in restaurants for many years, getting her first job at age 17. She and her husband also opened one of the first variety stores on the boardwalk, which they operated from 1930 to 1958. She also ran the Shell House for several years.
