Benjamin D. Schwartz (1909-2001) led a long life of service to the citizens of the Wilmington, NC area. He was born in Poland and came to Wilmington with his mother and father when he was four and a half. He attended Hemingway and Cornelius Harnett schools, and was a member of the first class of New Hanover High School in 1921. He was on the Wilmington City Council in the late 1960s, and was mayor from 1970-1972. He served in the State House of Representatives from 1972-1978, and the State Senate from 1978-1980. He was on the Wilmington College Board of Trustees from 1958-1969, and on the University of North Carolina Wilmington Board of Trustees from 1981-1989, and chairman of the board for two of those years. A residence hall on the campus of the UNC Wilmington is named Schwartz Hall in honor of his devotion and love of the college.
