Francis Lemountte "Tanky" Meier Jr. (1922-2013) born and raised in Wilmington, NC. He attended Tileston and New Hanover High School, where he played on the tennis team. After high school he worked at the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company. He was drafted in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He went to North Carolina State University (NCSU) after the war, and was the drum major of the marching band. He was active in the alumni of New Hanover High School and NCSU, in the New Hanover County Republican Party, Azalea Festival, Thalian Association, and the Cape Fear Museum of History Board, as well as veteran affairs and his church. The tennis court complex at New Hanover High School is named in his honor. He is buried at Oakdale Cemetery.
