Althea Gibson (1927-2003) was the first black tennis player to win the Australian Doubles, French Open, United States Open, and Wimbledon tournaments. She was born in South Carolina but grew up in New York City. In 1946 she moved to Wilmington under the sponsorship of Dr. Eaton, where she worked on her tennis skills and enrolled at Williston High School.
