Head shot of Martha Blount Simpson.
Martha Blount Simpson (1943- ) was appointed to the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission by Governor Jim Martin in 1988. She was not re-appointed in 1992 due to the fact that her family owned a tree farm in Washington County, which meant that she represented agricultural interests on the board. Environmentalists were angered by her appointment to the commission, saying that the governor was stacking the commission with representatives who would relax rules against shoreline development. These appointments spurred legislation to limit the number of developers that could be on the commission at one time.
