Dr. William Wagner (1927-1999) attended Washington High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946. He received a Master's degree from East Carolina University and a Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Dr. Wagner started his career in the North Carolina public school system and served as the Superintendent of Elizabeth City Schools from 1956-1961. He then came to Wilmington, NC as Superintendent of the school system and in 1968, he accepted the position as President of Wilmington College. When the college became part of the University of North Carolina (UNC) system, Dr. Wagner became the first Chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington (formerly Wilmington College). He is responsible for establishing the basic organization currently in place at UNCW that includes Cameron School of Business, Watson School of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Nursing, and the Graduate School.
