Helen Grey Smith (1925-2010) was an outstanding golfer and golfing teacher in the Wilmington, NC area during the 1960s and 1970s. She and her husband, former state senator William Smith, moved to Wilmington in the 1950s, and she dominated the golf scene thereafter. She was a star athlete at Southern Pines High School, where she lettered in basketball and tennis, and played one year on the boys' golf team. She continued to excel in sports when she attended Wake Forest College. She won the Tar Heel Golf Classic three times, and retired the trophy. She belonged to the Pine Valley County Club where she was club champion many times. She won 47 matches in a row at Pine Valley, and won the New Hanover County Women's Amateur Golf Tournament three times. She also qualified and played in the U.S. Woman's Open. The LPGA awarded her lifetime member status in 2005, and voted her into their Teaching and Club Professional Hall of Fame in 2006. She is in the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame.
