Alfred Moore Waddell (1834-1912) was born in Hillsborough, NC on September 16, 1834. After graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1853, Waddell was admitted to the bar. He moved to Wilmington were he began to practice law and remained in the city for the entirety of his life. Waddell held several public offices during his career including Clerk of the Court of Equity of New Hanover County, House of Representatives (four terms), delegate to the Democratic National Convention of 1880 and 1896 and Mayor of Wilmington.
In addition to his political career, Waddell contributed to the history of the Cape Fear region, authoring three books including "A History of New Hanover County and the Lower Cape Fear Region, 1723-1800." He died on March 17, 1912 and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
