Head shot of Willie Stargell
Wilver Dornell "Willie" Stargell (1940-2001) played baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates for over 20 years. He was one of the greatest home run hitters ever, and a powerhouse for the Pirates. He once held the record for the longest homer in nearly half of the National league parks. He was the oldest player to win an MVP award. He retired in 1982 with 475 home runs and as a 7 time All-Star, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987. He married Margaret Weller, the sister of WECT-TV anchor Frances Weller and Wilmington city council member Katherine Bell Moore, in 1993 at St. Paul's Episcopal church, and lived in Wilmington until he passed away at the age of 61.
