Vice Admiral James Dale Williams (1935- )was born in Lumberton, NC. He went to New Hanover High School, where he was the quarterback for the football team between Sonny Jurgensen and Roman Gabriel. After high school graduation in 1954, Williams went to the Navy Academy where he graduated with Distinction in 1958. He has primarily been involved in the submarine branch of the Navy, but has advanced in rank to Vice Admiral. He has served as Commander of the U.S. Sixth Fleet and Commander of the NATO Striking Force in Southern Europe. In Wilmington, NC, his father and uncles founded the Williams Dry Cleaning business, which his brother ran for many years.
