Frederick Cutlar Sadgwar, Sr. (1843-1925) was a local carpenter who did much to promote African American businesses in Wilmington, NC. He established a freedmen's school in Whiteville, NC after he returned to Wilmington from attending Lincoln University after the Civil War. He was appointed a mail carrier in 1883, and supported a business league organized to help African American businesses. He was also a director of the Wilmington Livery Stable Company and a member of the Chestnut Street Presbyterian Church. In 1876 he won two awards at the first African American Industrial Fair held in North Carolina for his collection of native minerals and woods. He is buried in Pine Forest Cemetery.
