Carrie Lane (1872-1981) was the daughter of slaves. She graduated from Scotia Seminary School in Concord, NC, and taught school in Onslow and Robeson Counties. She spent 40 years teaching in New Hanover County at Peabody and Wrightsville Sound schools, as well as Williston primary school. She was on the Board of Trustees for the Phyllis Wheatley branch of the YWCA. She is buried in Pine Forest Cemetery.
