Sheila Boles (1954- ) graduated from Seventy First High School in Fayetteville, NC in 1972 and started at North Carolina State University, but transferred to the University of North Carolina Wilmington when she heard they were starting a girls' athletic program in compliance with Title IX. She was the first player at the school to receive a scholarship to play women's basketball. She was named MVP three times in basketball, as well as NAIA District 28 player of the year in 1976. She also wrote a weekly column for the Star-News on sports while attending UNCW, as well as playing on the volleyball team that captured the 1974 A1AW State Championship.
After college she went to work in the New Hanover County school system. She became the Trask Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, and then varsity. She moved to Hoggard High School where over much resistance she was named boys basketball head coach, becoming the first woman in North Carolina to coach a boy's high school varsity team. She led the team to mutiple conference championships, and twice was selected mid-eastern 4A Basketeball Coach of the year. In 1999 she went on to become the Director of Athletics at Hoggard, the first female AD in New Hanover County. She was voted AD of the year in North Carolina in 2008. Coach Boles retired in 2008 but continues to give back to the community through her time and effort. She has been elected to the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame as well as the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame. She has been honored by the Colonial Athletic Association as a CAA Legend.
