John Aaron Orell (1875-1950) was born in Wilmington, NC. At a very early age, Orell began working for Acme Manufacturing Company and then for Standard Oil Company. While with Standard Oil, he also began to study book-keeping and ultimately rose through the ranks of the Wilmington branch to become Assistant Manager. In 1912, Orrell became the New Hanover County Auditor and served in this capacity until 1926, when he was appointed by the governor to a commission studying North Carolina county governments. In later years he also served as county treasurer, accountant and tax supervisor. Orell was involved in many social and civic affairs and was also a member of First Baptist Church. He is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
