William D. Halyburton Jr (1924-1945) was born in Canton, North Carolina and then moved to Wilmington. He went to New Hanover High School and is one of two Medal of Honor recepients from that school. He was a sailor in the United States Navy and posthumously received the Medal of Honor in WWII for his couragous actions during the Battle of Okinawa as a combat medic. The USS Halyburton, a guided missile frigate commissioned in 1984 was named for him. There is also a public park in Wilmington named for him.
