Marc Gesner Volk (1896-1938) was born in Pittsfield, MA. He started to work for the F.W. Woolworth Company at a young age and rose through the ranks of the company to manager before his career was interrupted by World War I. During the war, Volk joined the Air Force and was sent to France. Upon his return, he continued with the Woolworth Company until he met F. P. O'Crowley in Columbia, SC, and the pair purchased equipment to start a laundry business in Wilmington, NC in 1922. Volk remained with this business for the rest of his life. He is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
