Arthur Bertram Skelding (1868-1957) was born in Connecticut, and was a graduate of Yale Univeristy with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He married Clara Dorothy Ames of Washington, D.C. in that city in 1898 but came to Wilmington, NC soon after to work as a manager with the Consolidated Railways Light & Power Company, an early pre-curser to the Tidewater Power Company. He was part of the committee appointed to welcome Thomas A. Edison when he visited Wilmington in 1899 for the annual convention of the Association of Railway Telegraph Superintendents. As a manager with the Tidewater Power Company, he was an early proponent of the development of Wrightsville Beach, and was known for his enjoyment of the beach and swimming. Dorothy Skelding died of appendicitis in 1904, and Arthur married Mary Allan Short in 1907. In 1921 he moved to Charlotte, NC to become the manager of the Charlotte branch of Southern Public Utilities (Duke Power). He and his second wife are buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
