Portrait of Dr. John Thomas Hoggard.
John Thomas Hoggard (1879-1965) was born in Bertie County. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and received his medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia. Hoggard practiced medicine in Aulander, Atkinson, and Wilmington until 1949. In addition to his medical carreer, Hoggard also served as Chairman of the New Hanover County Board of Education from 1935 to 1952. He was instrumental in founding Wilmington College and served as the school's President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Hoggard also helped to organize Morris Plan Bank of Wilmington and Tom's Drug Company. Hoggard High School is named in honor of Dr. Hoggard.
