Portrait of Marsden Bellamy, Jr.
Marsden Bellamy Jr. (1878-1968) was born in Wilmington, NC. He attended Cape Fear Academy and the Horner Military Academy. Bellamy graduated from the University of North Carolina (now University of North Carolina Chapel Hill) in 1899, and went on to obtain a law degree from the school as well. When he returned to Wilmington, he began work at his father's law practice, Bellamy & Bellamy, from 1905-1909. Bellamy worked as the City Attorney of Wilmington and, from 1909-1913, as the Attorney of the New Hanover County Commission. He was elected to the state Senate in 1913, and in 1925 he was elected to represent New Hanover County in the Lower House of the General Assembly. Bellamy became the County Attorney in 1917 and served in this position until he resigned in 1953. He was active in many civic affairs in Wilmington and served as a Trustee of the University of North Carolina. Bellamy is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
