Robert Alfred Brand (1858-1930) was born in Clarendon County, SC. After spending nearly fifty years of service with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company, Brand was regarded as one of the foremost railroad officials in the southeast at the time. He began his railroad career as a messenger boy in a railway office in Timmonsville, SC, and rose through the ranks to become Vice-President of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. He came to Wilmington, NC in 1902 on a work assignment and remained in the city until his death. Brand was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and known to all as "Captain Brand."
