Frank Capra, Jr. (1934-2007), the son of a legendary Hollywood director, became a movie producer and president of EUE Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington, NC. He first came to Wilmington in 1983 to scout locations for "Firestarter." Acclaimed Italian film producer Dino De Laurentiis (1919-2010), the executive producer of the film, liked the area so much that he relocated to the city in 1984 and started De Laurentiis Entertainment Group (DEG), which eventually became EUE Screen Gems Studio.
Capra became president of the studio in 1997. He was granted a star on Wilmington's "Walk of Fame" in 1999, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington awarded him an honorary degree that same year for his contributions as the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Film Studies. He was a member of the Governor's Film Council and helped pass the state film incentive program that revitalized the film industry in North Carolina. He was the honorary grand marshal of the North Carolina Azalea Festival Parade in 2005.
Martha Schumacher (1954 - ) is a film producer who was hired by De Laurentiis in 1980. They were married in 1990 until his death and have two children.
