Portrait of Dr. Joseph Ward Hooper, Jr.
Joseph Ward Hooper, Jr. (1921-2002) was born in Wilmington, NC. He attended New Hanover High School, Princeton University, and Harvard Medical School. When Hooper returned to Wilmington, he founded Hanover Urological Associates with Dr. Stewart Hare. Dr. Hooper served on the staffs of Babies Hospital, James Walker Memorial Hospital, Cape Fear Hospital, and New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 1964, and was the first Republican to serve in that role since Reconstruction. Dr. Hooper is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
