Portrait of Addison Hewlett, Sr.
Addison Hewlett, Sr. (1876-1954) was born on Masonboro Sound, the son of Elijah and Almira Hewlett. He attended Masonboro Community School and Wake Forest College. Hewlett worked as a truck farmer on Waterside Farm, land that he inherited from his father. He was a member of the New Hanover County School Committee and was also elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 1916, serving until his retirement in 1952. Hewlett served president of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners from 1925-1926. He was an active member of the Masonboro Baptist Church, acting as superintendent of the Sunday school and church clerk. Hewlett is buried in the church's cemetery.
