Colonel Thomas Stephen Kenan (1838-1911) was a Confederate soldier and later a politician in North Carolina. He was the great-grandson of Revolutionary war general James Kenan, namesake of Kenansville. Colonel Kenan graduated from the University of North Carolina (now University of North Carolina Chapel Hill) in 1857, and returned to Kenansville to practice law. He was captain of the Duplin Rifles Company upon their formation in 1859, and was later promoted to Colonel. He was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war he was elected to the State legislature, later became the mayor of Wilson, NC, and the North Carolina Attorney General 1877-1885. He was a trustee at UNC, and president of the alumni association.
