Benjamin Washington Beery (1822-1892) was born in Brunswick County, NC. He was a partner in the Cassidey and Beery shipyard in Wilmington, NC. He was a privateer early in the Civil War, but then returned to shipbuilding for the Confederacy. He constructed several Confederate Ships, among them the steamer "Yadkin" and the ironclad "North Carolina." He is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
