Portrait of Sally Spears Hicks.
Sally Spears Hicks (1861-1932), also known as Mrs. Rufus W. Hicks, was instrumental in starting what became the first federated woman's club in North Carolina (1896). After hosting an interest meeting in her home in 1895, Hicks and others formed what became the North Carolina Sorosis Club; Hicks was elected First Vice President. Some of the projects the club worked on with Mrs. Hick's guidance were the development of Greenfield Lake Park and the free public library, and adding Home Economics departments in the public schools. The North Carolina Sorosis Club was incorporated in 1914, and a Junior Sorosis was started in 1938. The club house was located on North Third Street, Wilmington, NC next to Thalian Hall.
