Henry Bacon, Jr. (1866-1924) spent his childhood in Smithville (Southport) and Wilmington, NC while his father, Henry Bacon, Sr. engineered "The Rocks" down by Ft. Fisher. Henry Bacon, Jr. became a prominent architect who designed many buildings, monuments and memorials, best-known for creating the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
