Photograph of Leora Hiatt McEachern. Leora Hiatt "Billie" McEachern (1909-1982) was born in Sampson County, NC. She grew up in High Point, NC and moved to Wilmington, NC in 1951 with her husband. Billie was a significant contributor to the understanding of Southeastern North Carolina history through teaching, research, speeches and publications. She was an expert on genealogy and Lower Cape Fear history as well as a teacher at Cape Fear Technical Institute. Through collaboration with Isabel M. Williams, Crockette W. Hewlett, Ruth Walker and others, she published: Salt: That Necessary Article; Attorneys of New Hanover County; This is How it Happened; New Hanover County Safety Committee Minutes; and eleven volumes of Gravestone Records. Billie served as editor of the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society Bulletin and as Archivist for St. James Episcopal Church. She received many awards for her work and several libraries were named in her honor. Billie is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
