The S.S. Henry Bacon was built for the United States Maritime Commission by the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company. It was the 40th ship to be launch from Wilmington during World War II and was the only one to bear the name of Wilmingtonian. It carried war cargo and helped to evacuate Norwegian refugees. Unfortunately, the ship was sunk off the coast of Norway after an attack by German planes in 1945.
