Catherine Ann McKay (1821-1898) was born at Smithville (now Southport) ,NC. Her parents died when she was young, and she went to live with her uncle Dr. William Berry's family in Wilmington, where she converted to Catholicism. In 1845 she purchased a lot (along with her Uncle) on Dock Street in Wilmington for the erection of a church, which is where St. Thomas' Roman Catholic Church was eventually built. She is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
