Richard Langdon Meares (1866-1963) was born in 1886 in Wilmington, NC, the son of Captain Thomas D. Meares. He was educated at Horner Military Academy and attended the University of North Carolina (now the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill). He returned to Wilmington in 1911 and became the manger of the Armour Fertilizer Plant. In 1920, Meares entered the general insurance field, developing a career that lasted for the remainder of his life. Meares was a member of the Order of the Knights of Pythias and he elected as Supreme Master of the Exchequer in 1927. He was involved in many civic affairs and was a lifelong member of the St. James Episcopal Church. Meares is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
