Thomas Davis Meares (1848-1927) was born in Raleigh, NC. He was educated in Wilmington, NC schools and attended the University of North Carolina (now University of North Carolina Chapel Hill) for a period of time before enlisting in the Civil War as a Confederate soldier, attaining the rank of Captain. After the war, Meares worked for the Carolina Central Railroad Company as an agent until 1903. He served as Clerk to the Board of Audit and Finance for the City of Wilmington and later as City Clerk and Treasurer. At the time, Captain Meares was one of the most well known members of the Order of Knights of Pythias, elected Master of the Exchequer of the Supreme Lodge in 1896. He was also a member of St. James Episcopal Church, serving as vestryman, junior warden, and senior warden. He married Jane Langdon Young, daughter of Armand DeRossett Young. Captain Meares is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
