William Coffield Fields III (1917-2007) was a famous portrait painter from Cumberland County, as well as a dedicated genealogist and preservationist. He published a two volume work of the earliest county deeds of Cumberland county, as well as abstracting and editing the minutes of the Court of Pleas and Sessions of Cumberland County. Recipient of the 1974 North Carolina Award for outstanding contribution to the state. In 1975 Mr. Fields became president of the Board of Directors of the Fayetteville Museum of Art.
