1989 Crew of the United States Coast Guard Cutter, Northwind
Photograph of the last crew of the Northwind at the Wilmington, NC port in 1989.
The United States Coast Guard Cutter, Northwind, was one of the nation's largest ocean-going icebreakers at the time and a veteran of many missions to the polar region. The 269 ft. cutter was in service for 32 years and based out of the Wilmington port for many years. The crew provided scientific and support services to naval forces in the arctic and Antarctic regions as well as performed escort and data collection services for the National Science Foundation and the government of New Zealand. Due to major budget cuts, the Northwind was decommissioned in January of 1989.
