William S. Powell (1919- ), known as Bill, is a renowned North Carolina historian. He was born in Johnston County, NC and raised in Statesville, NC. Bill graduated from the University of North Carolina (UNC) in 1940 and enlisted with the U.S. Army during World War II. Once he returned to the United States, he earned degrees in History and Library Science from UNC.
Bill's long career in the state includes working for the North Carolina Department of Archives and History, Curator of the North Carolina Collection at UNC, and professor at UNC. He retired in 1986. Bill has made substantial contributions to the history of North Carolina, most notably including the following reference works: The North Carolina Gazetteer, The Dictionary of North Carolina Biography, Encyclopedia of North Carolina, and North Carolina Through Four Centuries.
