Catholic
Pro-Cathedral
is
in the

. The
original
school
building
in the
middle
of the
block
was
constructed
in
1871-1872
with
funds
from
Mary
Tileston
Hemingway
, a
wealthy
philanthropist
from
Boston
,
who
named
the
school
after
her
father
.
Opened
in
1872
, as
Tileston
Normal
School
, the
Italianate
building
was
designed
by
John
A.
Fox
,
Boston
,
architect
.
It
later
(1897)
was the
Wilmington
High
School
and
served
in that
capacity
until
the
early
1920s
when
New
Hanover
High
School
was
built
.
Other
additions
were
made
in
1910
(center
part
of
Ann
Street
annex)
and
in1919
(wing
and
stair
halls
to the
south
of the
original
building)
. In
1908-1911
,
St
.
Mary's
Roman
Catholic
Pro-Cathedral
was
built
by
Rafael
Guastavino
(father)
and
Rafael
Guastavino
(son)
in the
Spanish
Baroque
style
of
architecture
.
Natives
of
Spain
, the
two
Guastavinos
made
extensive
use
of
brick
and
tile
.
Local
citizens
recall
that the
building
contains
no
nails
. The
builders
also
worked
on the
Biltmore
Estate
in
Asheville
and the
Cathedral
of
St
.
John
the
Divine
in
New
York
City
. The
church
was
dedicated
on
28
April
1912
.
