Description
A
contractor
,
James
Walker
was a
native
of
Douglas
,
Lanarkshire
,
Scotland
,
who
came
to
Wilmington
in
1857
,
after
helping
to
construct
one
of the
wings
of the
U
.
S
.
Capitol
Building
and the
Smithsonian
Institute
in
Washington
,
DC
. He
built
the
Marine
Hospital
and
remained
in the
city
. A
bachelor
, he
amassed
considerable
wealth
and
just
before
the
turn
of the
century
,
determined
he would
make
a
sizeable
gift
to his
adopted
home
. With these
funds
, the
city
built
a
modern
hospital
, that
bore
its
benefactor’s
name
. The
first
ceremonial
brick
was
laid
on
May
22
,
1900
, on a
tract
of
land
,
located
at
North
Tenth
and
Rankin
streets
.
Unfortunately
,
Mr
.
Walker
did
not
live
to
see
the
building
completed
,
because
he
died
on
March
15
,
1901
,
just
months
before
the
building
was
opened
on
June
1,1901
. The
hospital
contained
fifty
beds
, a
self-contained
laundry
and
separate
wards
for
men
and
women
.
Over
the
years
,
other
Wilmington
citizens
gave
generously
to the
hospital
and
two
other
additions
were
added
-
the
W
.
H
.
Sprunt
Ward
(1904)
and the
Samuel
Bear
Building
(1909)
. On the
right
of the
photograph
is
the
Marian
Sprunt
Annex
(1915)
,
which
was
given
by
Dr
.
James
Sprunt
and his
wife
,
Luola
Murchison
Sprunt
, in
memory
of their
daughter
who
died
of
scarlet
fever
at
age
thirteen
. The
Sprunt
Annex
housed
a
thirty-three
bed
maternity
and
children’s
ward
.
Through
the
trees
on the
left
is
the
Nurses’
Quarters
,
which
was
financed
by
donations
in
memory
of the
Rev
. A.
D
.
McClure
, a
beloved
Presbyterian
minister
who
died
on
April
4
,
1920
.
James
Walker
Memorial
Hospital
continued
to
serve
Wilmington
until
New
Hanover
Memorial
Hospital
opened
in
June
1967
, and
shortly
thereafter
, the
old
hospital
building
was
razed
.
