Description
The
idea
of a
national
intracoastal
waterway
system
from
Maine
to the
tip
of
Florida
was
conceived
as
early
as the
late
eighteenth
century
.
Several
portions
were
built
, with the
first
link
-
the
Dismal
Swamp
Canal
-
being
completed
in
1805
.
Other
attempts
were
made
during
the
nineteenth
century
and
several
other
portions
were
finished
. By
1912
, the
inland
waterway
system
had
become
a
project
of the
Federal
Government
. There were
three
links
in the
Beaufort
,
NC-Cape
Fear
Area
project
,
which
was
authorized
in
1927
:

. From
New
River
to
Wrightsville
Sound
;
2
. From
Wrightsville
Sound
to
Myrtle
Grove
Sound
and
3
.
Across
the
Federal
Point
peninsula
to the
Cape
Fear
River
(Snow's
Cut)
.
Millions
of
cubic
feet
of
soil
and
silt
were
dredged
out
of the
tidal
marshes
to
construct
the
waterway
,
which
is
ninety
feet
wide
and
twelve
feet
deep
. By
1932
, the
entire
area
project
was
completed
.
Louis
T
.
Moore
was a
big
promoter
of the
waterway
.
