Description
The
privately
built
Shell
Road
or
Wilmington
Turnpike
was
constructed
in
1874-1875
from
Wilmington
to the
sounds
and
immediate
coastal
areas
. The
road
began
at
Sixteenth
and
Dock
streets
and
followed
the
route
that
is
roughly
today's
(1999)
Wrightsville
Avenue
. The
road's
surface
was
made
of
rock
,
marl
,
shells
and
limestone
,
which
over
the
years
was
bleached
by the
sun
to
pure
white
. The
main
stem
of
six
miles
went
to the
head
of
Lee's
Creek
(Bradley
Creek)
, with
branches
to
Masonboro
and
Wrightsville
Sounds
. A
toll
was
charged
for the
use
of the
road
.
It
became
a
public
highway
on
July
20
,
1902
,
when
it
was
sold
to
New
Hanover
County
.
