school
by this
name
was
Gregory
Institute
,
which
was
funded
by the
American
Missionary
Association
, a
missionary
and
educational
agency
of the
Congregational
Church
.
It
was
named
for
J
.
J
.
Howard
Gregory
, an
educational
philanthropist
from
Marblehead
,
Massachusetts
.
Later
,
Gregory
Elementary
School
joined
the
Williston
Industrial
School
and
Williston
High
School
on
one
campus
on
South
Tenth
Street
.
Williston
Industrial
Institute
opened
on
February
1
,
1915
and was
located
at
Tenth
and
Church
streets
.
It
was
based
on the
concept
,
advocated
by
Booker
T
.
Washington
, that
encouraged
black
workers
to
become
proficient
in
various
trades
, by
teaching
them
bricklaying
,
carpentry
,
cabinet
work
,
tailoring
,
plastering
, etc.
Grades
nine
through
twelve
were
housed
in the
institute
.
