.

,

Channel
Description
A
panoramic
view
of the
beach
taken
from
Harbor
Island
across
Banks
Channel
. The
Seashore
Hotel
is
the
large
building
at
left
.
Wrightsville
Beach
was
named
for
Joshua
Grainger
Wright
(1758-1811)
who
owned
a
vast
amount
of
acreage
along
the
sounds
and the
coast
. The
beach
is
a
part
of the
North
Carolina
Banks
, a
chain
of
barrier
islands
,
which
spans
almost
all
of the
North
Carolina
coast
from
Virginia
to
South
Carolina
.
Until
the
latter
half
of the
nineteenth
century
,
development
along
the
immediate
coast
was
hindered
by an
inadequate
transportation
system
. In the
1870s
, the
Shell
Road
(or
Wilmington
Turnpike)
was
built
from
Wilmington
to
Wrightsville
Sound
,
making
the
area
more
accessible
. In
1888
, a
railway
was
constructed
from
downtown
Wilmington
to the
Hammocks
(Harbor
Island)
. The
same
year
, the
Sea
View
Railroad
was
built
from the
Hammocks
to the
beach
,
opening
up
the
beach's
southern
extension
to
development
. The
Town
of
Wrightsville
Beach
was
incorporated
in
1899
.
Originally
called
, "The
Hammocks
"
Harbor
Island
was an
uninhabited
low
lying
island
of
sand
dunes
,
surrounded
by
marsh
and
Wrightsville
Sound
on the
north
and
southwest
, and
Banks
Channel
on the
east
. There was a
dense
growth
of
knotted
live
oaks
. In
1888
, the
Wilmington
and
Sea
Coast
Railroad
Company
built
a
steam
railroad
line
from
Wilmington
to the
Hammocks
.
Later
the
same
year
, the
line
was
extended
from the
island
via
a
trestle
over
Banks
Channel
to the
beach
. By the
late
'
teens
, the
Harbor
Island
Auditorium
,
designed
by
Henry
E
.
Bonitz
(1872-1921)
was
built
to
cater
to
large
meetings
,
especially
conventions
.
Development
of the
island
began
in
earnest
in the
1920s
,
when
Shore
Acres
became
its
first
residential
community
.
