Murchison
Bank

offices

doctors

and a
variety
of
businesses
occupied
the
upper
stories
. For a
number
of
years
, the
offices
and
plant
of the
Wilmington
Star-News
was
located
on the
west
end
of the
ground
floor
. In
1972
, the
First
Union
Bank
moved
into the
ground
floor
and the
building
was
renamed
. The
side
of the
Murchison
National
Bank
Building-Acme
Building
on the
northeast
corner
of
Front
and
Chestnut
streets
,
is
in the
foreground
. At
right
on the
corner
of
Front
and
Chestnut
streets
is
the
Murchison
National
Bank
-
Acme
Building
. The
bank
organized
in
March
1899
,
moved
into the
structure
in
1902
.
Charles
McMillen
was the
architect
, with
John
H
.
Brunjes
, the
builder
.
According
to the
cornerstone
, the
Acme
Investment
and
Realty
Co
.
(1898-1904)
were the
owners
of the
Neo-Renaissance
Classical
building
.
Other
later
tenants
included
: the
Home
Building
Corporation
and
Home
Saving
Bank
(1925)
and the
Morris
Plan
Bank
(1934)
. Also,
located
on the
same
block
were the
Belk-Williams
Department
Store
(forerunner
of
Belk-Berry)
and on the
far
corner

Efird's
