Description	Dr. Avant shown in his Flower Garden at his Home on Red Cross St. Dr. Frank W. Avant was born in Smithville (Southport), North Carolina. Dr. Avant attended Howard University (1896); Lincoln University, PA (1898), and Leonard Pharmaceutical School, Raleigh, NC, (1903); Leonard Medical School, Raleigh, NC, (1908). He financed his education by working for William Rockefeller in New York City. He was the first black Physician to practice in NC with certificate of internship from "1-A' Hospital; He was President of New Hanover County Negro Society (1917); He was a Charter Member, Society of Former Interns and Residents of Freedman's Hospital (Washington, DC) and he was active in pushing for hospital facilities for blacks.
