The
First
Presbyterian
Church
has been
plagued
by at
least
three
fires
in its
history
.
Dating
from
1818
, the
first
church
was
located
in the
100
block
of
South
Front
Street
between
Dock
and
Orange
streets
.
It
burned
in
1819
and
another
church
was
constructed
near
the
same
site
.
When
the
second
church
burned
in
1859
, the
property
on
Third
Street
was
purchased
, and a
handsome
brick
structure
was
built
.
Samuel
Sloan
was the
architect
,
who
also
designed
the
First
Baptist
Church
(1859-1870)
. On the
night
of
December
31
,
1925
,
First
Presbyterian
Church
was
destroyed
by
fire
for the
third
time
.
Hobart
Upjohn
of
New
York
,
designed
the
gothic
stone
church
(shown
in the
photograph)
,
which
was
completed
by
November
18
,
1928
.
