One
of the
first
battles
of the
American
Revolution
was
fought
at
Moore's
Creek
(near
Currie
,
NC
, in
Pender
County)
on
February
27-28
,
1776
.
It
pitted
local
Patriots
against
Highland
Scottish
Loyalists
. The
monument
pictured
is
commonly
called
the
Mary
Slocumb
Monument
.
Local
tradition
says
that
Mrs
.
Slocumb
rode
65
miles
through
the
night
from her
Duplin
County
home
to
help
tend
the
wounded
of the
battle
. In
1929
, she and her
husband
,
Ezekiel
, were
moved
from their
graves
near
Dudley
,
NC
, and
reburied
near
the
battleground
monument
.
